Guy Porter

September 8, 1962 — November 23, 2023

Harrah, OK

Guy Porter left us Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in OKC, at the age of 61 years 2 months 15 days.  Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Friday, December 1, 2023, at Chappel Hill Cemetery east of Lexington, entrusted to the care of Wadley’s Funeral Service.

Guy was born September 8, 1962, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in OKC, to GP and Sammie (Ashford) Porter.  Guy grew up in Choctaw, enlisting in the United States Navy following his high school graduation.  He served his country until retirement in May 2002.  Guy then returned home to Choctaw, where he was employed at Tinker AFB as an aircraft mechanic.  Throughout his naval service, Guy always made time to come home and visit his mother.  After each visit something would disappear from her home; she laughs when thinking about it, knowing he cherished and cared for each item he appropriated.  One time it was an extra-long quilt she and Wesley had made because the Navy ones were not long enough.  By the time he retired, it was a bit worn and tattered, so Guy asked his mother to fix it, which of course she happily did.  Another time it was her favorite cookbook.  She looked everywhere for that cookbook, until Guy called and asked her to decipher one of her notes on a recipe he was preparing.  Wesley’s best memories of Guy were watching him grow, caring for their cows, working together, and Guy stopping by nearly every day after work to sit on the porch and visit with him.  One of Lori’s fondest memories is of a fishing trip they took together.  A fish she caught got stuck on a rock, so Guy stripped down to his underwear, jumped into the freezing water, and retrieved the fish for her.  He later said it was the biggest fish of the day and he didn’t want her to go home without it.  Throughout their lives, Guy and Gary were best friends who enjoyed riding motorcycles, sailing the world, and razzing each other.  One memory Gary says has always stayed with him is a time when he had beaten Guy at Monopoly, Gary describes making a huge fuss about winning to the point Guy knocked him silly. Gary reports, with a chuckle, the look on Guy’s face when he punched him was priceless.  For Ronda, Guy was always her savior, from putting worms on her fishing hooks to looking out for her throughout their childhood adventures.  His acceptance and care without teasing her meant a great deal.  Terry, ever the car enthusiast, remembers a sixteen-year-old Guy taking him cruising with him on Air Depot in Midwest City, in his 68 cutlass and how “cool” hanging out with Guy made him feel.  What Kathy remembers most is Guy’s wicked sense of humor, impish smile, twinkling eyes, and soft laughter.  Guy enjoyed an active life, hunting, raising cows, he loved his dogs, enjoyed working his land, and so many other things.  He touched every life he encountered, and he will be sorely missed.  At this very moment, Guy is reclining on one of heaven’s clouds, his feet crossed, his arms up and hands behind his head, while watching over us with a grin.

Guy is preceded in death by his father, GP Porter; his paternal grandparents, Guy and Velta (Anderson) Porter; and his maternal grandparents, Samuel and Ethel (Sexton) Ashford.  Survivors include his mother, Sammie Moser; his stepfather, Wesley Moser; his brother, Gary Porter; his sister, Kathy Ann Saxe; his stepsister, Ronda Kay Brainard; his stepbrother, Terry Wayne Moser; his longtime romantic interest, Lori Cottrell; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
